The death toll in the Nova Scotia shootings is now at 23, following an update on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nova Scotia RCMP say that the updated number accounts for the shooter and 22 victims, including an RCMP officer, a teacher, a pregnant nurse, and a 17-year-old girl.

Some of the victims were known to the shooter, while others were not.

The police have found 16 crime scenes in five locations across the province so far: Portapique, Wentworth, Debert, Shubenacadie and Enfield.

RCMP say that the investigation is “detailed and complex,” and that they are currently focused on gathering accurate victim information and determining whether others may have aided the shooter.

“This is an unprecedented incident that has resulted in incredible loss and heartbreak for countless families and loved ones,” the press release says. “So many lives will be forever touched.”

The RCMP thanked Canadians for their support, saying, “While we have lost one of our own, and had one of our members injured, we would like to acknowledge the many other individuals who were affected by this tragedy.”

“We are humbled by the stories of their lives and contributions to their communities.”

virtual vigil will be held to honour the memory of the victims at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 24.
