Niagara Falls is turning the lights out in solidarity with the Black community

Spread the love

The lights of Niagara Falls will be shut off this evening in solidarity and support for the Black community, according to a press release from the Niagara Falls Parks Commission.

Both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls will be plunged into darkness between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. this evening.

The Niagara Falls Illumination Board says that the period of darkness will acknowledge Blackout Tuesday.

“Originally started by the music industry, Blackout Tuesday is intended as a collective pause to spark honest, reflective and productive conversations about what actions can be taken to support the Black community,” the press release says.

Prominent Canadian musicians that have supported Blackout Tuesday include Drake, the Weeknd, Shania Twain, Justin Bieber and Avril Lavigne.

Niagara Falls has previously been illuminated in different colours in recognition of major events in Canada. In April, the Falls glowed red and blue in honour of the Nova Scotia shooting victims.
