Goodbye, “Mr.” Potato Head! 🧸
An iconic Toy Story character is about to become more inclusive! Hasbro, the company that makes Mr. Potato Head toys, announced that the spud would soon have a gender-neutral name in a new rebrand.
The Associated Press reports that the toy’s name will simply be “Potato Head” going forward.
The change is expected to appear on packaging and boxes this year, although no date has officially been announced.
Hasbro said that Mr. Potato Head, who has been a fan-favourite for as long as 70 years, deserved a “modern makeover.”
It’s part of a wider effort to become more inclusive, from multiple companies and brands.
This includes Barbie, whose makers have recently made moves to create the doll in a wider range of skin tones, body shapes and sizes.
Thomas & Friends has added more female characters to its TV “Steam Team” too, announcing in 2018 that future series would feature more diverse characters and female protagonists.
In addition to its American Girl dolls, Mattel is now selling more inclusive boy versions, too.
