Canada’s emergency benefit for students (CESB)  was just announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and it’s going to provide immediate help for students across the country.

The plan will provide $1,250 a month from May to August for post-secondary students whose employment has been affected by the pandemic or whose prospects for future employment have been affected.

Students who care for someone with a disability can receive up to $1,750 a month.

Students who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program, planning to start school in September, or graduated in December 2019 are eligible for the benefit.

Students earning less than $1,000 a month are also able to apply.

Trudeau also said that the government is working to create over 76,000 additional summer jobs for students, and that any students volunteering to help during the crisis can earn between $1,000-$5,000 through the new Canada Student Service Grant.

He said that the government will also be doubling student grants across the provinces for the 2020-2021 school year to assist with providing students with financial aid, including $6,000 for full-time students and $3,600 for part-time students.

Overall, the student aid package amounts to $9 billion in funding.

The news comes after criticism faced by the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit that did not include provisions for students.

Trudeau said that legislation for the CESB will still need to be passed and that he will be working with the official opposition to put it through.
