Air Canada just updated its refund policy amid mounting customer frustration, offering travellers two new options if their flight is cancelled due to COVID-19.

On Friday, the Canadian airline said that it will now offer the option of a voucher with no expiry date or discount Aeroplan points.

“The new goodwill policies and cancellation options are retroactive for customers with original travel between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021,” the airline said.

Customers with non-refundable tickets will be able to choose:

  • An Air Canada Travel Voucher for the remaining value of their ticket that has no expiry date, is fully transferable and retains any residual value or;
  • The ability to convert the remaining value of their ticket into Aeroplan Miles, with 65 per cent more value versus the normal rate for buying Miles.

Travellers with refundable tickets will continue to have the option of refunds, or they can choose either new option instead of a refund, if they prefer.

Customers who have already recieved Air Canada’s original refund — a  travel credit valid for 24 months — will be able to swap it for a voucher that doesn’t expire or Aeroplan miles beginning June 15, 2020.

The airline says that both new options will give customers “greater confidence and flexibility to plan and book travel.”

Air Canada also released a new summer schedule on Friday with a number of domestic and international routes, some of which begin as soon as next week.
